Petra Class creates minimalist color compositions in gold and gemstones. She is best known for her series of gemstone color studies, combining faceted and crystal-form gems in architectural brooches, earrings and necklaces that give us a fresh way to look at and enjoy the rich hues of nature’s gems.
She notes about her work: “My approach to jewelry making is informed foremost by the European tradition of applied art. I limit myself to creating jewelry that is wearable and also, to a big degree, to the materials traditionally perceived as precious. Over the years, I find certain themes reoccurring in my work, the rhythmical arrangements of differently textured materials”
Petra Class studied art and philosophy at the University of Stuttgart, and then completed a traditional goldsmithing degree at the Fachschule fuer Glas und Schmuck in Neugablonz. She then apprenticed as a silversmith for three years, before opening her own studio and creating her own designs. She lives in the United States. Her work is included in the “Art of Gold” exhibition and publication by the Society of North American Goldsmiths and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Daphne Farago collection.
