Tom & Bernd
Munsteiner, fourth
and third generations born to the tradition of gem-cutting in
Germany, are considered the most accomplished of gem sculptors. The
Munsteiners have revolutionized the lapidary arts. Bernd is
know best for his innovative "fantasy cuts", sculpting
gemstone rough into transparent free-form gems titled "Symbolon"
and "Reflections", a mosaic style that plays on the subtle
shading of gem colors. Tom's
sharp-edged asymmetrical outlines, unique "ladder"
grooves, and newest cabochon "Imagination" cut are the most
recent additions to this family's art, in which they seek to
maximize the potential reflection and refraction of the gem. Jutta
Munsteiner, Tom's wife and partner, is a master goldsmith whose
designs are dramatic and fresh yet focus on the unique beauty of the
sculpted gems. Their works are prized by collectors. Bernd Munsteiner's one-man
retrospective exhibition is currently on exhibit in
China.
