The Grand Complications watch week at Aaron Faber Gallery takes place June 5 through June 12, kicking off with a special exhibition of complicated watches at the gallery beginning June 5, in tandem with Stacy Perman’s booksigning of A Grand Complication: The Race To Build The World’s Most Legendary Watch (Atria Books/Simon&Schuster). The booksigning and cocktail begins at 5:30 in the gallery.

Ms Perman’s story of the race to create the world’s most complicated timepiece, is, according to the New York Times review from May 5, 2012, “artfully told and illustrated with rich historical detail.” The author will be in the gallery to sign copies of her book.

In her book, Perman details the rivalry and mania surrounding watch collecting among the very rich at the turn of the 20th century. The competition in particular between American industrialists led to the creation of extraordinary complications, as James Packard and Henry Graves Jr each tried to outdo the other. Fast forward to 1999, and one of these unique made-to-order Patek Philippe complications watches (“the Graves”) sold at auction for over $11 million dollars.
