Gem-Set Ring

Michael Boyd's rings are personal and unique. He creates each ring for one wearer, the shapes and diversity of gems carefully chosen to delight or intrigue. Here, he cuts a blue and black medley of half-moon and shard shapes -- black jade, gem silica, two shades of labradorite -- and sets them together in 22K gold frames. The oxidized sterling mounting is further set with sapphire beads on the side, a detail he intends primarily for the wearer's enjoyment. Ring measures 1" x 3/4" across.

Gem silica, its marketing name, is a relatively rare, blue to blue-green type of chalcedony. Found almost exclusively in Arizona its color is due to copper.
