Paul Lobel Modernist brooch suggests a Picasso-esque cat, but is an abstract by this very collectible mid-century Modernist sculptor and jeweler. The brooch measures 2" x 1-1/2", and is hallmarked.

Paul Lobel was a gifted designer who turned his hand to jewelry making only at the outset of World War II. Toni Greenbaum notes that "restrictions imposed during World War II curtailed Lobel's use of nickel and steel, so he turned to sterling silver and its possibilities for jewelry and small sculpture".

Lobel's style is Moderne, with a sleek curvilinear form, soaring line at times, and broad curved polished surfaces that celebrate the metal itself. His work is generally abstract, though his stylized guitars and animals are often recognizable.
